Hydraulic fracturing is a dangerous natural gas extraction technique that involves pumping large volumes of water and chemicals underground at pressures high enough to fracture bedrock.
Both the fluid used, and the gas itself pose a great threat to underground aquifers and to the soil. There are many environmental problems associated with this technology; well sites destroy farmland, flow-back water pits leach chemicals into the soil, and condensate tanks release volatile organic compounds directly into the air.
In Quebec, the government tried to force large scale development on the province without conducting a single environmental study. They have since been forced to put the brakes on the industry due to overwhelming public pressure. Hydraulic Fracturing is Canada’s next big environmental disaster. We need strong leadership to stop it now.
Industry is pushing ahead with hydraulic fracturing in Canada at break-neck speed so that Canadians don’t have a chance to realize what is happening. All we need to do is look at what has happened in Texas or Pennsylvania where the industry has enjoyed over a decade of almost completely unrestricted development. Those two states alone drill an average of 15 thousand wells per year.
Canada needs to take concrete steps to stop this industry in it's tracks. We need to act before the country's economy and workforce become dependent on this highly destructive resource extraction technique. There is still time for change. That's why I am suggesting a National Ban on Hydraulic Fracturing.
Let's stand up for common sense, let’s protect the environment and say no to Hydraulic Fracturing now, once and for all, before its too late. We simply cannot afford to take the risk.
